Held at the Mader Maintenance Centre in Perth, these sessions were led by a team of expert Mader personnel and guest speakers relevant to the industry. High school students in years 10, 11, and 12 from local schools were invited to explore the opportunities available in the mining industry.
Charlotte Wagner, Mader Group's HR & Training General Manager, emphasised the incredible opportunity presented to interested high school students through the Tools for Life program.
"At Mader, we believe in showcasing the realities of being a tradesperson and offering students an exclusive chance to gain insights into the rewarding aspects of a career in the mining sector," said Charlotte.
"Our program provides a relaxed environment where students can directly hear from our experienced team, expand their industry knowledge, gain valuable hands-on experiences, and explore the world of trades, all while having fun."
The first day commenced at the Mader Maintenance Centre, where students were given a facility tour and learned about the various equipment serviced in our state-of-the-art workshop. Guided by two skilled members of Mader's management team, both with firsthand experience as tradespeople in the mining industry, the participants gained practical exposure to a CAT 3196 core engine.
Following their hands-on experience, the group received insights into different career pathways available and engaged in workshops with our Recruitment Lead, who shared valuable tips and tricks for securing apprenticeships or jobs in the sector.
On the second day, the students had the opportunity to listen to Brayden Ainsworth, a former West Coast Eagles player turned Youth Mental Health Officer from Happiness Co, who delivered a captivating and inspiring discussion about the significance of maintaining mental well-being and staying true to core values. In the afternoon, the group enjoyed team-building activities organised by Mader's adventure partner, Three Gears.
To conclude the sessions, each student received a certificate of completion and walked away with an abundance of valuable insights from industry experts. Equipped with newfound confidence, these students are well-prepared to pursue their own apprenticeships or jobs in the mining sector.
The Intro to Mining sessions are a part of the wide-ranging Tools for Life program, which is aimed at empowering youth, improving social dynamics and lessening educational inequality.
